League Speaks Out to Support a New Black History Collection in Collier County

Allison Wescott (Wendy Riedel) | Published on 5/18/2022

On May 16th, Janet Hoffman, former Co-President of the LWVCC, spoke on behalf of the League at the Naples City Council meeting in support of a proposal to refurbish a Pullman baggage car that will become part of the new Black History Collection at Collier County's Depot Museum. The new galleries in the rail car will be Naples’ first permanent site to teach and document how African Americans have contributed to Collier County and beyond. The proposal for the Black History Collection was presented by the NAACP and Friends of Collier County Museums.  The Naples City Council showed its support by suggesting a $50,000 donation would be made to the project.  A commitment for a larger grant of nearly $400,000 has been made by the State of Florida. The NAACP and Friends of Collier County Museums will approach Collier County for additional funding over the summer months. Words of individual support were also offered by League member Joanne Huskey and League patron Paul Arsenault.
