YOUR INPUT ON CIVILITY IS NEEDED

Incivility across a range of issues is a growing concern among many in our community. The LWVCC has agreed to assist Greater Naples Leadership (GNL) by distributing a short survey on incivility to help shed light on just how much of a problem incivility might be in Collier County. Our members’ responses will be used to inform GNL’s February 7th public event, Reduce the Rancor: A Community Forum on Civil Discourse. Other community organizations also are sharing the survey with their members to capture a broad community perspective on this important issue.

Please take a few minutes to respond as fully and thoughtfully as you can by Friday, October 20, 2023. Your responses will remain anonymous unless you choose to identify yourself.

In the survey, when asked for your group affiliation, please identify LWVCC as Group 3. This will provide information on how LWVCC responses compare to the average responses of all survey participants.

We recognize that many survey respondents are affiliated with multiple groups in Collier County. Please share your views on only one survey. If you receive invitations to participate in the survey from multiple sources, reply only to one. It is your choice as to which survey invitation to accept.

CELEBRATE NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
WITH THE LWVCC, DEI COMMITTEE & BRIDGES DIAGLOGUE
at the American Indigenous Arts Celebration
Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum, Big Cypress Indian Reservation
Friday, November 3 @ 10:00

Meet at the campfire in front of the museum at 10 a.m. Bring a friend, join us for lunch at the museum and a tour, and enjoy the many performances. Learn about the culture and living history of the indigenous people of SWFL.

Meet Tribal Court Justice and former board representative of the Seminole tribe/and forester, Joe Frank and Rhona Roff, an environmental chemist/activist with Sierra Club. Together they will lead a conversation about water quality concerns tied to climate change and the Western Everglades Restoration Project (WERP) in Big Cypress.

Join us for lunch under the chickee. There will be many food trucks. You may prefer to bring your own lunch or snack in case the food trucks run out (as happened last year)!

Tickets are $10 dollars (general adult admissions) and include the museum and festival, or $7.50 for seniors (55+). Useful tip: Most venders accept cash only! Care for the planet by carpooling. Let us know by email if you need a ride, or if you can drive others and we will be happy to help!

NOVEMBER 2023 BOOK CLUB

The Fall 2023 LWVCC Book Club Meeting will be held on Thursday November 9 @ 4pm. The location will be the lovely Park Shore Tower Clubhouse. (Parking details to follow.) We will be discussing The Undocumented Americans by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, which was a National Book Award finalist for Nonfiction in 2020.

Book Club Leader Patricia Rodilosso will circulate discussion questions to registrants in advance.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT

The 15 week abortion ban is having serious consequences for the lives of women with pregnancy complications (fetal abnormalities are often not detected until 18-20 weeks). The states with more restrictive reproductive rights are having a higher maternal mortality rate. A woman’s risk of death from pregnancy is much higher in our country than other developed nations. Women in Florida are not always able to obtain the medical health care that they need with the current restriction on abortion. Doctors need to consult with attorneys before providing care to a patient. The League supports access to affordable, quality health care, including birth control and the privacy to make their own reproductive health choices

Please ask everyone in your household to sign the petition with an amendment to limit government interference with abortion. Getting one million petitions signed will allow the amendment to be placed on the ballot
Reach out to five friends asking them to sign the petition
Volunteer to collect petitions at public events and/or public locations. Someone from the new Reproductive Health Subcommittee may be able to join you.

Our Social Policy Committee still has many petitions left to sign with December 31, 2023 as our deadline. Over 400,000 petitions have been vetted with a total of over 700,000 signed. We still need at least 300,000 more petitions signed. Contact Janet Hoffman for questions, petitions, and/or help in getting petitions signed.

LEAGUE TAKES POSITION ON CONSERVATION COLLIER MONEY GRAB

On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, the Board of County Commissioners voted to amend the ordinance governing Conservation Collier to allow the program's segregated funds to be used to cover a budget shortfall. LWVCC President Diane Preston Moore urged the Commissioners not to approve the amendment. While the League did not prevail and the Commissioners voted 4-1 to amend the ordinance, the League's remarks were quoted in several articles, including a story that ran on WGCU FM and was posted on WGCU's website.

LWVFL TAKES LEADERSHIP PROGRAM TO THE NEXT LEVEL

LWVFL has announced the Sara Werder League Leadership program generously funded by our own LWVCC member. The new state program is modeled after the Collier League Leadership Program now in its fifth year. LWVCC has a lot to be proud of in promoting leadership throughout LWV in Florida.

League members can nominate themselves or other League members by October 24.

HOW WE ARE VIEWED

Maintaining the League’s role as both a nonpartisan and a political organization can be a challenge. We are nonpartisan in that we do not support or oppose any political party or candidate. We show our nonpartisanship by avoiding discussion of political parties or candidates at League meetings, including committee meetings (except for Voter Service meetings when planning for a candidate forum). We do not allow partisanship to be discernible when we are representing the League publicly, whether we are presenting a program or tabling. The League does believe that it is our responsibility as a citizen to participate in the activities of a political party. All members, with limits on board directors and officers, are urged to be politically active. This activity is kept separate from our League meetings. Our nonpartisanship as an organization is what brings more strength to our positions on issues and promotes our voice. We are political in that we take a position on selected government issues after extensive member study and agreement. Our positions come from the result of our study and are not influenced by the positions of political parties. Our credibility as an effective nonpartisan political organization in the community is crucial.
