LWVCC President
Diane Preston Moore
Every November, I make a concerted effort to practice gratitude. To hold myself accountable, I create a “thankfulness post” each day and post it to my personal Facebook page. I don’t take the practice lightly. I try to be intentional in what I post and not just “phone it in.” When the local, state, national, and world stages seem to feature only news of war, dysfunction, and destruction, I find it constructive and even healing to seek out a glimmer of goodness – something for which I am thankful.
As this November begins, I do not have to look far to feed my gratitude. The League gives me plenty of reasons to be thankful. I am thankful that the League has a voice in our community and uses it wisely. I am grateful for our commitment to educating the public about the voting process, the candidates, and local issues that affect our daily lives. I am grateful for the tireless work of our committees, who educate and advocate while remaining nonpartisan. I am thankful for our Board of Directors and the thoughtful manner in which the Board makes decisions in the best interests of the LWVCC. They are not thanked for their commitment nearly enough.
Mostly, I am grateful for each League member. I never cease to be impressed with the unique talents and skills of our members or the magic that happens when we combine those individual talents and skills to create something powerful. As an all-volunteer, grassroots organization, we are only as strong as our members and supporters. So, I am grateful for all that you do to support the work we do. As a League, we empower voters. As members and supporters, you empower the League.
Wishing you a month of gratitude and a Happy Thanksgiving!

No one wants the candidate who loses the popular vote to become President of the United States, which is entirely possible with the current statewide “winner take all” system. In 2006, the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact was introduced. It’s an elegant solution to ensure that the candidate with the most votes in all 50 states wins the presidency. Learn how this works without a constitutional amendment.
The LWVFL is offering Floridians for the National Popular Vote to do several presentations during the next year, sponsored and promoted by the LWVFL, to “spread the word” and educate League members and other Floridians about NPV. Suzanne Low, the NPV team leader for LWV Collier County and District Chair of Floridians for the National Popular Vote, will present "Deciphering the NPV" on Zoom on December 6 from 5-6 p.m.
Register for Zoom presentation
The League is welcoming anyone interested to attend, so invite your friends and colleagues to register too! |
The theme of this year’s Celebrate the League event is “Nonpartisan, No Nonsense News.” To be held on February 21, 2024 at The Club at Olde Cypress; invitations will be going out by email soon.
This year’s speakers will be WGCU’s Pam James and John Davis. James is the Executive Producer of Content, and Davis serves as the Assistant News Director, Gulf Coast Life Arts Edition and Morning Edition Host/Reporter. In a fireside chat format, they will be discussing how to provide nonpartisan election information and the critical stories of today. Tickets will go on sale in November. A limited number of seats are available this year, so be sure to buy your tickets early. Individual tickets are $175, and Speaker Reception tickets are $75.

Education Committee
Nancy Chism, Pat Plummer, Co-Chairs
The Education Committee hosted the October 2023 General Meeting at Tiburon Golf Club. Our speaker Dr. Leslie Ricciardelli’s presentation was well-received by the record 86 attendees for a first of the season meeting. Members described the presentation as interesting, informative, and refreshing.
The CCPS School District Overview is available on the LWVCC website.
The Committee met October 11 and discussed the many issues brought up in Dr. Ricciadellis’s presentation, as well as those discussed in the August Zoom meeting with Dr. Mike Martin, retired president of Florida Gulf Coast University. Preschool Education, Vouchers, Book Bans, and DEI issues, and a focus on P-16 (Preschool through post-secondary education) are among many concerns. Several members attend school committee meetings in person and online and they emphasized the importance of being present to encourage school board members whose views we support.
The Know Your County Government sub-committee (Jan Eustis, Cathy Hackney, Connie Shoemaker, Kathy Ryan, Diane Moore, and Pat Plummer) met with CCPS administration and our 4H partner to begin planning for the 2024 sessions.
The Education Committee will meet next on November 8 at noon at the North Naples Government Center. |
Social Policy Committee
Janet Hoffman, Betty Schwartz, Co-Chairs
The Social Policy Committee has formed three subcommittees: Reproductive Health, Gun Violence Prevention, and Affordable Housing. We are looking for volunteers to join these groups. You can either email Janet and Betty at governance@colliercounty.org or sign up by logging into the LWVCC website, selecting Member Resources, then List of Committees. Next, scroll down to the Social Policy Committee box, click the arrow for Subcommittees and select the subcommittee(s) you wish to join.
The next Reproductive Health subcommittee will be meeting at Cathy Hackney’s home on Thursday, November 9 at 3:30 p.m. Please refer to the website calendar for the address, or email Janet at governance@lwvcolliercounty.org. This subcommittee will meet regularly on the second Thursday of the month.
The next Gun Violence Prevention meeting will be on Zoom on Thursday, November 16 at 4 p.m. A regular date and time for this subcommittee will be chosen then.
The next Affordable Housing meeting will also be on Zoom and will be announced soon. |
Juvenile Justice Committee
Libbie Bramson, Chair
Our Kids are Our Future!
Did you know that the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is one of our leading community organizations in preventing delinquency and in giving at-risk kids a second chance after they have committed a misdemeanor or low-level felony? Caren Langevein, CCSO Youth Resources Center Supervisor, was the JJC’s October guest speaker. Working alone or in collaboration with other community service providers (including the Department of Juvenile Justice, Department of Children and Family Services, David Lawrence Center, Collier County Public Schools, and many others) the CCSO is committed to providing the resources that help youth develop into responsible and productive citizens.
Some of the preventative programs for kids between 8 to 17 include Truancy Reduction and Compliance, and Juvenile at- Risk Mentoring. Juvenile Civil Citation is a pre-arrest diversion program for eligible kids that enables them to perform community service hours in lieu of arrest and formal prosecution for misdemeanor offenses. New programs include the CCSO Autism Support Project and the CCPS / CCSO Laced & Lethal Fentanyl program.
Our next JJC meeting is December 1, when we will visit PACE Center for Girls, Immokalee. Contact Libbie Bramson for carpool information. |
Plastics Task Force
Loralee LeBouef, Charlotte Nycklemoe, Leads
We are thrilled to announce the release on our website of a comprehensive guide to the plastics problem. Whether you're a long-time advocate for reducing plastic use or just starting to explore the issue, this user-friendly guide has something for everyone. To access it, visit the Task Force page.
Good News About Plastic Pollution: PepsiCo announced in August 2023 it will replace plastic rings on multipacks of its plastic bottle soft drinks with paperboard clips and wraps in its efforts to convert to sustainable packaging. Watch for this plastic-reducing change to roll out in the U.S. and Canada later this year.
Reducing your Plastic Helpful Hint: Much of clothing is made from and with plastic-based fabric, which is not recyclable. Let's consider sustainable clothing lines, vintage shops, avoiding elastic and spandex when we can, and repairing or repurposing our clothes when possible.
Encouraging Quote: "Consumers really can change the market. Plastics companies are looking into better recycling methods because it's such an important consumer issue." Shelie Miller, Ph.D. Professor at University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability, in Consumer Reports, 9/8/2021.
