| LWVCC AND GNL NEED YOUR INPUT!
Deadline extended to November 5
The LWVCC is partnering with Greater Naples Leadership to host Reduce The Rancor: A Community Forum on Civil Discourse on February 7th. To help us understand the issue of incivility right here in Collier County, LWVCC is assisting GNL by distributing a short survey. Your responses will help shape the forum in February. Please take just a few minutes to respond to the survey to give us your perspective. Your responses will remain anonymous unless you choose to identify yourself. In the survey, when asked for your group affiliation, please identify LWVCC as Group 3. This will provide information on how LWVCC responses compare to the average responses of all survey participants. If you are affiliated with other groups in Collier County and receive invitations to participate in the survey from multiple sources, please share your views on only one survey. It is your choice as to which survey invitation to accept.
Thank you for your participation!

| TIME IS RUNNING OUT
The 15 week abortion ban is having serious consequences for the lives of women with pregnancy complications (fetal abnormalities are often not detected until 18-20 weeks). The states with more restrictive reproductive rights are having a higher maternal mortality rate. A woman’s risk of death from pregnancy is much higher in our country than other developed nations. Women in Florida are not always able to obtain the medical health care that they need with the current restriction on abortion. Doctors need to consult with attorneys before providing care to a patient. The League supports access to affordable, quality health care, including birth control and the privacy to make their own reproductive health choices
- Please ask everyone in your household to sign the petition with an amendment to limit government interference with abortion. Getting one million petitions signed will allow the amendment to be placed on the ballot
- Reach out to five friends asking them to sign the petition
- Volunteer to collect petitions at public events and/or public locations. Someone from the new Reproductive Health Subcommittee may be able to join you.
Our Social Policy Committee still has many petitions left to sign withDecember 31, 2023 as our deadline. Over 400,000 petitions have been vetted with a total of over 700,000 signed. We still need at least 300,000 more petitions signed. Contact Janet Hoffman for questions, petitions, and/or help in getting petitions signed. | SAVING LIVES: NAB VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The Neighborhood Accountability Board program (NAB) is one of the most effective diversionary programs in our area for youth who have been arrested for a low-level crime. It helps keep kids out of the justice system which harms their future. The NAB program would allow youth to be able to obtain a higher education, become employed, find housing, and become a successful adult, while an arrest would make this difficult. Youth should not have to suffer the rest of their lives for one mistake that they made.
NAB volunteers and a case worker participate in each NAB conference with the youth and youth’s parent or guardian to address the harm they have done to the victim, their families, and the community. Upon successful completion of each case plan, the arrest record is expunged.
The current program, which is in Lee County, is at risk due to a shortage of volunteers for Bonita Springs and Estero. A minimum of two volunteers is needed for each NAB conference. Nora Donato-Hitchcock, Youth Services Program Manager in Lee County, has offered to provide a 3-hour training in Bonita Springs if at least 5 people will commit to attend in person. She would offer the training at the end of December or early January. Volunteers are not required to attend a set number of NAB conferences per year and there is no need to commit to conferences North of Bonita Springs and Estero. Carpooling could be used for transportation to the training and to conferences.
Please let Janet Hoffman (239-206-0300). Thanks so much for considering a way to help youth lead successful lives. | NEW NON-PARTISANSHIP POLICY
Our LWVCC board recently approved a new nonpartisan policy. Certain constraints are necessary to maintain the non-partisanship of our organization. All members need to be familiar with our nonpartisan policies which are in our LWVCC Handbook on our website,
Some of the policies remain the same. For example:
- All statements, written or verbal, made in the name of the League shall be given by the President. This is to maintain one unified voice. Members may only speak for the League if it has been approved by the President.
- Once the League (local, state, or national) takes a position on an issue, we may not identify ourselves as a League member when publicly expressing an opinion that is not the same as a League position.
A new item in our nonpartisan policy is:
- Members, volunteers, and guests may not wear campaign items at League meetings or at public events with which the League is involved.
Members are urged to be politically active as this is an essential ingredient of civic responsibility. Work that is done for political parties is appreciated but is kept separate from the League and is not discussed at League meetings. | It is not too late to sign the petitions!
