Pat Aiken-O'Neill and Paula Schwerin, coordinators for the February 8, 2024, City Council and Mayor Forum, we are seeking volunteers both before the event and at the event. Please contact them for more information or to offer your help. It is going to be a very important event for our local government.
Before the event, we need 8-10 volunteers to draft and review questions for the candidates (meeting to occur in January ) and to assist with publicity. At the event, we will need 20 volunteers to set up, serve as greeters, represent LWVCC at table, and to collect and vet questions from the audience for moderator.

THE "CELEBRATE THE LEAGUE"
SILENT AUCTION COMMITTEE
NEEDS YOUR HELP

Do you have any of the following items that you would be willing to donate:
- Tickets to any concerts, plays, musicals, operas, art lectures
- Gift cards or certificates to local restaurants
- Does your community have a golf or racket club? Would you be able to secure a round of golf for four, possibly to include lunch? Maybe a couple of private tennis or pickleball lessons?
The Silent Auction Committee will also be happy to accept donations of bottles of wine (Value $20 or more) for the Cork Pull. Guests will pay to select a numbered cork which will match a numbered bottle of wine. Bottles may be brought to the December and January general meetings.
If you have questions about what type of donations would be welcomed, please contact Teresa Stohs or Susan Sonnenschein.
| POWER THE SOUTH
Trust is an essential ingredient in a democracy. With confidence in our press and government waning, the LWVUS felt the need for a workshop to build skills in relational organizing and advocacy. Laura Hansen Reynolds and Janet Hoffman were our two representatives for this Power the South Workshop in Orlando.
With many people lacking confidence in the media and in government officials, LWVUS is recommending that we communicate and advocate with friends and family. We are a trusted source of information to them. LWVUS has created an app, League in Action, to facilitate connecting with others. League In Action is for anyone who believes in our mission. This digital platform allows us to directly connect and take action on issues impacting our communities.
With the tap of a button, League in Action users can:
- Find and send letters to elected officials on topics like voting rights, dark money, reproductive justice, and more;
- Register for workshops and rallies and other virtual and in-person events through the League;
- Learn about important political topics and share this with friends and family easily;
- Find information about upcoming elections;
This is a free app available in the App Store on your cell phone. We hope you will use this valuable resource!
At the Power the South workshop, LWVUS presented valuable information to build our advocacy skills. A future article in LWVCC Update will share these ideas. Stay tuned and keep reading!
| | The Tech Team maintains a Document Library on the LWVCC website including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that assist the Team in keeping the website and useful tools up to date.
Another SOP that can be very useful to members, especially committee Chairs and sub-committee Chairs is SOP#11: Event Planning Checklist. This includes the approval process to hold an event and a checklist of equipment and supplies you may need for a successful event, including the location of those items (for example, the LWVCC tent, banner, clipboards, etc.).
The SOPs are located on the website under Member Resources/Document Library/Administration/SOPs. If you have any questions about any of these documents, please contact a member of the Tech Team.
| 2022-23 COLLIER COUNTY COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT
Learn more about Collier County! The Collier Community Foundation’s 2022-2023 Assessment, supported by the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, is now available online.
Updated from the 2017-2018 Assessment, it highlights the county’s strengths, needs and remaining gaps. It is an excellent resource document for organizations such as the League, as our committees continue efforts to maintain and improve the quality of life in Collier County. Based on the report, the top four community priorities are: 1) controlling housing costs, 2) the environment, 3) managing growth and development, 4) bringing better paying jobs to the area. The next priorities are: 5) public education and workforce training, 6) mental health services, 7) access to health and dental care, 8) childcare for young children and summer/after school programs for youth.

| NEW SOCIAL POLICY SUBCOMMITTEES FORMED
The Social Policy Committee has formed three subcommittees: Reproductive Health, Gun Violence Prevention and Affordable Housing. We are looking for volunteers to join these groups. You can either email Janet Hoffman and Betty Schwartz or sign up by logging into the LWVCC website, choosing Member Resources, then List of Committees. Next, scroll down to the Social Policy Committee box, click the arrow for subcommittees and click on the subcommittee(s) you wish to join.
The next Reproductive Health subcommittee will be meeting at Cathy Hackney’s home on Thursday, December 14, at 3:30 PM. Please refer to the website calendar for the address, or email Janet. This subcommittee will meet regularly on the second Thursday of the month.
The next Gun Violence Prevention meeting will be on Zoom on Thursday November 16th at 4pm. A regular date and time for this subcommittee will be chosen then.
The next Affordable Housing meeting will also be on Zoom and will be announced soon.
| SAVING LIVES: NAB VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The Neighborhood Accountability Board program (NAB) is one of the most effective diversionary programs in our area for youth who have been arrested for a low-level crime. It helps keep kids out of the justice system which harms their future. The NAB program would allow youth to be able to obtain a higher education, become employed, find housing, and become a successful adult, while an arrest would make this difficult. Youth should not have to suffer the rest of their lives for one mistake that they made.
NAB volunteers and a case worker participate in each NAB conference with the youth and youth’s parent or guardian to address the harm they have done to the victim, their families, and the community. Upon successful completion of each case plan, the arrest record is expunged.
The current program, which is in Lee County, is at risk due to a shortage of volunteers for Bonita Springs and Estero. A minimum of two volunteers is needed for each NAB conference. Nora Donato-Hitchcock, Youth Services Program Manager in Lee County, has offered to provide a 3-hour training in Bonita Springs if at least 5 people will commit to attend in person. She would offer the training at the end of December or early January. Volunteers are not required to attend a set number of NAB conferences per year and there is no need to commit to conferences North of Bonita Springs and Estero. Carpooling could be used for transportation to the training and to conferences.
Please let Janet Hoffman (239-206-0300). Thanks so much for considering a way to help youth lead successful lives. | It is not too late to sign the petitions!
