Stay after the luncheon—OR COME TO THE MEETING ROOM ABOUT 1:20—on March 11th to get hands on advice on how to use Facebook or Instagram. Jen Lapham, our new Social Media chair, will be there to help….just send Jen a quick email to let her know you’d like to stay for a few minutes; her mail is socialmedia@lwvcolliercounty.org.

Our 2024 social media campaign created to motivate younger voters (21-40) to take part in our elections was launched on February 12th! Starring in the campaign is one of our newest members, Jessie Howkins, who is 25 and a great spokesperson for the League. We will have something new every couple of days.

You can help! Please follow us on Instagram! It’s easy to find, just put #lwvcolliercounty into the search field when you open Instagram and then hit FOLLOW when our account comes up. We need these video posts to go “viral” so please like, comment, and share the individual posts.

Also, please contact young people you might know and ask them to do the same… we need help spreading the word to that younger crowd. We are posting the videos on Facebook, too, and please get on Facebook and share it to your friends.
CONSERVATION COLLIER NEEDS YOUR HELP

Please attend by 10:30am, the Tuesday March 12 meeting of the Board of Collier County Commissioners (BCC). Our LWVCC has supported Conservation Collier since its inception. The program is meant to purchase fast disappearing land for wildlife habitat and enjoyment of our citizens (Baker Park). The current Board of County Commissioners recently raided the $53 million collected to purchase land to use for "other purposes". Now they want to make this a permanent state of affairs. On a positive note, the BCC will hear how to make it less difficult to jump through hoops to actually buy the land. However, they have not shown any intent to restore the millions taken from the Trust. We and others including Audubon, will be showing up to request that the Commissioners replenish the funding. Please attend and support this wonderful program.

FEBRUARY 15 BOOK TALK
WITH AUTHOR RAYMOND ARSENAULT

To commemorate Black History Month, LWVCC sponsored an author talk and an extensive exhibit based on Raymond Arsenault’s new book,  . This is the first full length biography of this great American hero.  In a time when there are efforts to suppress information about African American history in schools, and to put limits on voting rights, it is fitting that we honor John Lewis, a giant in America’s struggle for civil rights, voting rights and human rights.

2024 Arsenault Book TalkOver 100 visitors listened to Arsenault trace Lewis's upbringing in rural Alabama, his activism as a Freedom Rider and leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, his championing of voting rights and anti-poverty initiatives, and his decades of service as the "conscience of Congress." For six decades Lewis was a towering figure in the U.S. struggle for civil rights. As an activist and progressive congressman, he was renowned for his unshakable integrity, indomitable courage, and determination to get into "good trouble."

Lewis promoted a philosophy of nonviolence to bring about change. He helped the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders plan the 1963 March on Washington, where at only 23 years of age, he spoke at the Lincoln Memorial. Lewis's activism led to repeated arrests and beatings, most notably when he suffered a skull fracture in Selma, Alabama, during the 1965 police attack later known as Bloody Sunday. He was instrumental in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and in Congress he advocated for racial and economic justice, immigration reform, LGBTQ rights, and national health care. All causes we still are fighting for. Arsenault recounted Lewis's lifetime of work toward one overarching goal: realizing the "beloved community," an ideal society based on equity and inclusion. The event was sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Collier County, the NAACP, and the Collier County Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Shelby and Iqbal Mamdani Foundation and the Arsenault Studios.   The Exhibit was designed and curated by Yvonne Hill.  Signed copies of the book can be purchased locally at Barnes and Nobles.

Florida Weekly logo

The League has formed a partnership with Florida Weekly, a free local newspaper published once a week, to further the education of voters as part of the Get-Out-the-Vote campaign. The paper will print regular non-partisan articles, using the LWV logo, about upcoming elections, registration, voting options, and forums, culminating in a four-page Voter Guide in August for the Primary Election and again in late October for the General Election. Links to recent articles will be provided here in the LWVCC Update.

Americans use an astonishing 142 billion straws a year. So carry a reusable straw with you, or just use your lips! When you order at a restaurant, remember to say “No straw please.” And give them back if you find them in the bag when you check your takeout. You’ll help the environment AND save the restaurant some money when you don’t bring home unneeded straws, cutlery and condiments. A stainless steel straw may be the best, since they contain no PFAS (AKA “forever chemicals”).
