EARLY VOTING ENDS
SATURDAY, AUGUST 17 @ 6:00PM
| LWVCC IN IMMOKALEE
Saturday August 10th
Once again we had a fun filled, hot summer day interacting with the families of our community at the 14th Annual Lipman Backpack Giveaway. Starting at 9am, six dedicated LWVCC members ( Diane Moore, Paula Schwerin, Carolyn Moore, Susan Golden, Susan Sonnenschein, and Tina Palmese) were super busy signing “passports” for kids of all ages to prove attendance to earn a new bicycle, bike helmet, backpack, and a whole lot more. Many visited our LWVCC table, kids and their parents, to play with the “wheel” answering questions about election and voting—winning candy and stickers for knowing the importance of voting. We gave out coloring pages with crayons & question pages (both fun and educational) and flags. Many parents took our Voter Guide and other printed material about the League. It was a most successful day for all those that volunteered!

| CANVASSING BOARD VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
FOR MANUAL AUDIT – AUGUST PRIMARY
We are so pleased to have many members volunteering to observe the Collier County Canvassing Board for the August 20 Primary election! We’ve filled all the volunteer spots for the meetings during the August time frame, but still have room for a couple of volunteers for the Manual Audit on September 4. If you can observe the Manual Audit, please sign up at www.lwvcolliercounty.org, clicking ‘take action’ then ‘volunteer’. You’ll receive background information on observing this important and interesting task.
That said, Canvassing Board meetings are open to the public so anyone and everyone can attend. If you choose to join us, please wear your LWV name pin. Meetings take place at the Supervisor of Elections buildings, 3750 Enterprise Avenue, Naples 34104.
VOLUNTEER | SMART WEEK
August 26-30
Everytown for Gun Safety is launching a new campaign around back-to-school called SMART Week, this year taking place from August 26-30! It will seek to educate communities across the United States about the simple steps that everyone — gun owners and non-gun owners alike — can take right now to prevent gun violence
One of the smartest things all adults can do to keep kids, classrooms, and communities safe from gun violence is raise awareness about secure gun storage. SMART Week will seek to educate communities across the United States about the simple steps that everyone — gun owners and non-gun owners alike — can take right now to prevent gun violence:
- Secure all guns in homes and vehicles
- Model responsible behavior around guns
- Ask about the presence of unsecured firearms in other homes your child visits
- Recognize the role of guns in suicide
- Tell your peers to Be SMART.
Bottom line: as summer comes to a close and kids head back to school, adults have homework too. During SMART Week, let’s spread the word about secure gun storage and how to Be SMART.

| UNDERSTANDING OUR FLORIDA GOVERNMENT
Understanding Our Florida Government is a series by League ambassador Sandy Parker. Sandy is the founder and publisher of Sparker's Soapbox, whose mission is to encourage and facilitate informed voting in Collier County. Learn more at sparkers-soapbox.com
Each Florida school district is governed by a school board comprised of at least five members who serve staggered terms of four years. Collier County’s school board has five members elected by voters countywide.
School taxes represent 40% to 50% of a homeowner’s total property tax. This is one reason it’s important to know who is on the school board and what their priorities are.

Five county constitutional officers, together with a Board of County Commissioners, form the executive branch of government in Collier County and in each of the 46 other non-charter counties in Florida. This “plural executive” form of government established by the Florida constitution ensures that no single person is responsible for the administration of all county functions.
