How civic technology can shape a smarter system of government

Sadie Holtzmeyer photoJoin us for our second Hot Topic: the Digital Democracy Project (DDP) presented by Sadie Holtzmeyer, Executive Director of Florida Chapter of DDP. The Project is expanding to empower all U.S. voters to have more of a say on legislation. Before legislation makes it to a bill, voters weigh in on how they would vote on the bill. That information then goes to legislators, and a scorecard comes out showing how the legislators voted compared to what the people wanted. This is a fascinating process to learn more about and gives voters another way to have their voice heard.

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY PARADE
January 19 @ 9:30-1:00

Please come join us for a fun-filled day as we celebrate Martin Luther King Day on Monday January 19th! You can participate in the MLK Parade in Downtown Naples and also help at the tabling event in Cambier Park. You can register on the Events Calendar or call Tina Palmese for any questions. Let’s help make this a stand out day for the League as we support our community!

Volunteer to observe the City of Naples Canvassing Board for the 2026 Naples Municipal election! At an open public meeting, the Canvassing Board conducts the Logic and Accuracy test of ballot processing and voting machines, reviews Vote-by-Mail (VBM) and provisional ballots, certifies the official results of the election and observes the manual audit of precinct/race. This is an important League service in supporting our mission of free and fair elections, with interesting people who care about election security. Volunteers are needed for the following dates and times:
  • Tuesday, January 27, 10:00 a.m. (Logic & Accuracy Test)
  • Tuesday, February 3, 5:00 p.m. (VBM ballots, Preliminary Returns)
  • Thursday, February 5, 5:05 p.m. (VBM & Provisional Ballots, Official Certification, Select Audit Precinct)
  • Wednesday February 11, 10:00 a.m. (Manual Audit)
The meetings will be held at the office of the Supervisor of Elections, 3750 Enterprise Avenue, Naples, 34104. If you can observe one or more meetings, volunteer observers will receive background information to familiarize them with this interesting and important task.

Civics Unplugged image

The Communications Team recently began a video series titled “Civics Unplugged” posted on all of LWVCC’s social media sites. The goal of these short reels is to educate viewers on the basics of national and local civics, such as Branches of Government, Voting Rights, Constitutional Amendments, City Council, and more.

We will be posting these 1-minute videos approximately once a week on Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, and YouTube. As always, the more “clicks” on the postings we get, the more engagement we will see in our community! So please make sure you check-in to our social media to view, like, comment, and share our reels.
