NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT
Yesterday, Governor DeSantis signed HB 991 into law. Immediately thereafter, a lawsuit was filed. The lawsuit, filed by the League of Women Voters of Florida, Florida Immigrant Coalition, Florida Rising, Common Cause, Hispanic Federation and UnidosUS, seeks to block enforcement of the law before it goes into effect in 2027. Plaintiffs are represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of Florida, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, and Advancement Project.
Plaintiffs argue that Florida’s additional documentation requirement will make it significantly harder for eligible voters — especially naturalized citizens, low-income voters, married women who’ve changed their name, voters of color, students, voters with disabilities, transgender people, and seniors — to register and participate in elections.
Stay tuned as we will receive direction from the State soon. Thanks so much for your continued support.

ELECTION WORKERS NEEDED
The LWVCC has a long tradition of volunteering as election workers for our Adopt-a-Precinct program. We work with the Office of the Collier County Supervisor of Elections. which trains our League members. For many years, we have staffed the Moorings Presbyterian Precinct and, in more recent years, the Immokalee Precinct. It is a long 12- to 14-hour day! Should you wish to become part of this rewarding experience, please contact Tina Palmese, and we will forward your information to the SOE to schedule the initial one to two-hour orientation. Later training will be required for assigned positions as we approach the August 18th Primary and November 3rd General elections.

Celebrate Earth Day with the League at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. We will have a table showing the activities of Voter Services, Environmental Affairs and the Plastics Task Force. I am looking for volunteers to help at our table. It’s a fun day and a great way to meet other League members. Please sign up for an hour or more!! For questions, please contact Lynn Martin.
The festival includes a variety of vendors and environmental exhibitors showcasing fun, educational and entertaining family activities, experiences and resources. Enjoy local entertainment, keynote lectures, conservation speakers and children’s presentations. Eat, play and learn while experiencing the Conservancy Nature Center buildings, electric boat rides and nature trails.

LWVFL has a new program that is working to strengthen our communities by using civil discourse and learning conflict management skills. This initiative promotes healthy, respectful dialogue that builds trust and understanding among people with diverse perspectives.
The program started in February with LWVFL’s online book discussion of High Conflict by Amanda Ripley. The book encourages a focus on reducing the conflict rather than “winning” the argument. In March, LWVCC had a Living Room Conversation (LRC). LRC uses structured conversation to build relationships, discover common ground, and appreciate different perspectives. On May 29, there will be an online book discussion of The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt. In sharing his moral foundations theory, he states that we all have the same six moral foundations. Individuals and cultures just vary in how they prioritize them.
This initiative will continue for at least another year. We hope that you find the books and activities from Bringing Floridians Together meaningful. and they help you to build skills for strengthening our community.
