MISSION

The mission of the Education Committee is to support a free public school system in Collier County with high standards for student achievement and with equal educational opportunity for all that is financed adequately by the state through equitable funding formulas. We believe that community support, accomplished educators, and a superintendent and school board that value collaboration, respect and trust are vital to the success of our schools and our students. In addition, we support an adequately funded public higher education system that is accessible and unbound by restrictions to academic freedom.

PROGRAM OJECTIVES 2023-2024

Conduct a collaborative (with at least two other LWVCC committees/ teams) initiative for the League (1) to demonstrate support or our public schools and (2) to promote among ALL Collier residents an understanding of public education as a public good and benefit for all. This education and advocacy effort will include at least two initiatives that may include a community forum, bus advertising, and articles and educational materials in several languages.

Add a subcommittee on higher education to research and discuss threats and opportunities for Florida residents and students in postsecondary education. As appropriate the sub-committee will coordinate with LWV Florida Education Action on a least one higher education initiative or lobbying effort.

Attend or view online Collier County School Board meetings and discuss relevant issues at each committee meeting. The committee may make suggestions for public comments to be made at School Board meetings or letters to the editor and opinion pieces (with permission if under LWVCC).

Continue the 40-year commitment to the Know Your County Government (KYCG) program, in collaboration with the Collier County Public Schools (CPCPS) and 4 H (University of Florida Collier Branch), for up to 50 juniors and seniors in our high schools. KYCG supports a deeper understanding of civics by providing the opportunity to meet with local government officials and service providers.

Follow proposed education related state legislation and identify at least two pieces of legislation to be considered “high priority” for inclusion in our initiatives.
