LWVCC President
Diane Preston Moore
March is National Women’s History Month, and the 2023 theme is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.”
Much of the national focus is on recognizing women who have been active in media and storytelling, but I think we all are storytellers. We can use Women’s History Month as an opportunity to reflect on the role the LWVCC plays in our own individual stories and consider the story we are telling our community about the League. The LWVCC has grown in size and scope since our founding in 1975, and our nearly 300 members use their skills and knowledge to support the work of our active committees and teams.
You can read about the great work of our committees and teams below, but the most effective way to tell the story of our League is to extend an invitation to experience what we do first-hand. Why not ask a friend or a neighbor to join you at our March 13th General Meeting? Or to join the March 20th Transparency Tour at the Supervisor of Elections Office, coordinated by Voter Services? Or to learn about the pressing problem with plastic at the Wine & Wisdom on March 21st? Getting others involved in our work helps keep the League’s story alive.
And for our members, we are close to winding down our fiscal year 2023-24. On April 10 at Tiburon Golf Club, we will hold our Annual Meeting at 10 a.m., followed immediately by our April General Meeting at 11:30 a.m.. More information about registration will be available in mid-March. So in March, we celebrate all of the women involved in the League of Women Voters and thank you for making the League a part of your story!

As a special treat, you will also be given a sneak preview of Plastics 102 coming in season 2023-24. Come join us as we unite to stand up and shout: STOP the destruction of our planet, STOP the destruction of our waterways, SAVE our environment for our future generations! |

Education Committee
Pat Plummer, Chair
The Education Committee hosted the February General Meeting and invited Ms. Kelley Lichter to be our speaker. Over 80 members and guests attended the meeting, the highest attendance since pre-Covid.
While our speaker choice was controversial for some, our members were respectful and their written questions submitted were thoughtful, at times provocative, and always civil. Ms. Lichter's comments mirrored many of her campaign positions and the School Board actions since her election as Board Chair. The Education Committee thanks our league members for the great attendance at this meeting.
In April, at our LWVCC Annual Meeting, Dr. Kamela Patton will be honored for her outstanding dedication and service to the Collier County Public Schools over 12 years. President Diane Moore will present the award.
The Education Committee has grown to over 25 active members who follow school board meetings, pending state and federal legislation, and plan education and advocacy initiatives for the coming year. Our priorities include support for all public schools, and we aim to promote understanding of public schools as a public good to ALL Collier residents. In addition, the Education Committee has added a subcommittee on Higher Education to address the challenges facing higher education.

| Community Leaders Panel Discussion
| spacer
Members of the LWVCC League Leadership Class 4 learned that they can be most effective by working together with community leaders to research issues, develop solutions, and advocate for the implementation of solutions.
To further their understanding of our community's structure, leadership, and challenges, the group recently organized a panel discussion with six impressive Community Leaders. They included Melissa Blazier, Chief Deputy, Collier County Supervisor of Elections Office; Eileen Connolly-Keesler, President/CEO Collier Community Foundation; Vincent Keeys, President NAACP Collier County; Lisa Morse, Director Engagement and District Initiatives, Collier County Public Schools; Amy Patterson, Collier County Manager; and Eric Strahan, Editor Florida Weekly. The discussion was moderated by Linda Penniman, LWVCC member and outstanding facilitator.
The panel and audience discussed issues of great interest to the community, such as affordable housing, the environment, and the role of newspapers. Overall, it was more than a class. It was a two-way, stimulating discussion filled with thoughtful comments and positive thinking!
The purpose of the League Leadership Program (LLP) is to identify future leaders and to increase their level of activity in League programs and processes. The LLP is a positive learning experience that offers participants exposure to League issues, an understanding of the League mission, and enables participants to become more effective and engaged leaders.
For more information about the community leaders and the LLP, read the full report online.
| Transitioning to Solar Energy
| spacer
The benefits for transitioning to solar energy in your home or small business in 2023 are historically unprecedented! One reason has to do with the passage of the federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the other reason has to do with the Southwest Florida Solar Co-op (Lee and Collier Counties) administered by the non-profit organization Solar United Neighbors (SUN).
Through the IRA, those installing solar panels (array), and/or battery backup connected to the array, are entitled to a tax credit of 30% of the cost of the installations. Another notable benefit to solar users in 2023 is that Florida utilities continue to offer net-metering (NM). NM enables solar power panel owners to be financially compensated by the utility companies for excess energy generated by their panels.
The Southwest Florida Solar Co-op (SWFSC), administered by SUN, is conducting a Co-op that ends enrollment on April 30. SUN's main mission is to educate on all things one should know before transitioning to solar energy, helping Co-op participants to make better-informed and wiser decisions. Visit the SUN website for Solar101 info session scheduling and much more. For more information, contact Gary Bromley.
