MAY 2023 LUNCHEON & GENERAL MEETING

We asked on our recent survey whether League members would like an additional General Meeting in May, and the response was a resounding “YES”! We listened, and we’ve added a General Meeting and Luncheon on May 8th at 11:30 AM. Our Committees will give a short presentation about their plans for the coming year, and you will have the opportunity to connect with fellow Leaguers before we take a break from our General Meetings for the summer. We hope to see you there!

Help build our League and educate the general public! Our most effective method of membership recruitment is the General Meeting! Invite a guest to our next General Meeting and support LWVCC!
LWVUS WANTS OUR INPUT

LWVUS has distributed a survey to the membership, to gather input for planning for the future. It takes less than 10 minutes. If  you missed it in your “in box”, there is still time time to complete it before the survey on April 22.

CELEBRATE EARTH DAY WITH THE LEAGUE
April 22 @ 10:00-3:00

The Environmental Affairs, Membership,  and Voter Services Committees will have a table at the Earth Day celebration at The Conservancy. The celebration is 10-3. Everyone is invited to attend. Please, we need volunteers to help us at our table. If you have an hour or two, please contact Lynn Martin.
AFTERNOON & EVENING EVENTS FOR OUR BUSY MEMBERS!

Our growing ranks include a number of people who work or volunteer during the day. They often can't attend our luncheons or morning committee meetings. The Membership Team is putting together a group of members to help us organize events in the late afternoon and evening. These events could focus on a speaker or topic—or be purely social and networking! If you’re interested, please contact Membership Team Chair Beth VanDamme.
RECOGNIZING THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE US

2023 photo of past presidents

The speaker at our April luncheon, League member and Clerk of Courts Crystal Kinzel, took us on a whirlwind tour of Collier County’s 100 year history. Continuing the theme of history, we recognized our own historical treasures: LWVCC’s past Presidents. These exceptional women are forever part of the Collier County League’s history, which makes them part of the fabric of our county’s history. Our Past Presidents are our League’s most treasured resources. Their leadership has given our local league a firm foundation that we continue to build upon, and we thank them for their invaluable guidance. US ARMY CORE OF ENGINEERS (USACE)
COASTAL STORM RISK MANAGEMENT FEASIBILITY STUDY

The USACE is re-initiating their Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study for Collier County and is seeking public input. The purpose of the study is to recommend a plan which reduces the risk from storm surge, flooding and improves coastal resilience. The 2020 draft study which recommended hardened structures will be the starting point in 2023. We urge all LWV members to become involved. Attend the meetings; submit written comments; speak up. There are two public meetings: April 18, 4:00-6:00 on Zoom and April 26, 5:30-7:00, at the South Regional Library. Comments may also be provided in writing. To register for the meetings, to submit comments or for more information, please visit the project website.

The LWV and The Conservancy believe that there are nature-based solutions to address storm surge and coastal resiliency which will protect life and property as well as preserving and enhancing our natural coastal resources. This is important for maintaining the businesses and livelihoods that make up the robust local economy. Additional information and talking points are available from the Environmental Affairs Committee (Lynn Martin & Patti Forkan)

KNOW YOUR COUNTY TRAILBLAZERS HONORED

KYCG Trailblazers photo

Four of our members who were instrumental in developing Know Your County Government (KYCG) and shepherding in through 40 + years of success were honored at the April 10 General Meeting at Tiburon Golf Club. Linda Denning, a retired Collier County Extension Service agent for the 4H Youth Development Program, started the first KYCG in 1980 with the League of Women Voters and Collier County Public Schools. Kathleen Slebodnik, Joyce Fletcher, and Kathy Ryan made sure the program continued through the years with lots of help from many LWVCC members including many this year. A big congratulations and thank you to our trailblazers and all our members who supported the program through the years.
