 | MAY 2023 LUNCHEON & GENERAL MEETING
May 8 @ 11:30
Tiburon Golf Club
We asked on our recent survey whether League members would like an additional General Meeting in May, and the response was a resounding “YES”! We listened, and we’ve added a General Meeting and Luncheon on May 8th at 11:30 AM. Join us to hear our speaker, Julie Schmelzle, Chair of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, tell us about the issues that the Chamber is working on. The Greater Naples Chamber supports a wide range of policies at the local, state and federal level aimed at cultivating economic opportunity for all, including making housing accessible to the workforce, protecting valuable natural resources, supporting those with mental or behavioral health concerns, and providing economic sustainability to businesses that want to relocate to the area. At this meeting, before we take a break from our General Meetings for the summer, our Committee Chairs will give us an update on plans for 2023-24. We hope to see you there! | Registration and payment must be made online
by MAY 4 @ 3:00 PM
Late registration/walk in price will be strictly enforced

| LEAGUE TURNS OUT IN FULL FORCE AT EARTH DAY
On Saturday, April 22, 15 League members showed up to help educate visitors to the Conservancy of SW Florida’s Earth Day Celebration. The event brought out a significant number of young families, helping us to further our objective of engaging with young voters as well as future voters. It was a great opportunity to present the League as an important non-partisan community member, inform the public about Vote411.org, and involve new members in our activities. Thanks to all who participated! | MEMBER-APPROVED DUES CHANGES EFFECTIVE MAY 1
At the Annual Meeting, our members unanimously approved a small change in the dues structure. Dues at the basic, Suffragist Individual level will not change, and other dues levels saw a minor increase. The increase will go into effect on May 1, 2023.

| AFTERNOON & EVENING EVENTS FOR OUR BUSY MEMBERS!
Our growing ranks include a number of people who work or volunteer during the day. They often can't attend our luncheons or morning committee meetings. The Membership Team is putting together a group of members to help us organize events in the late afternoon and evening. These events could focus on a speaker or topic—or be purely social and networking! If you’re interested, please contact Membership Team Chair Beth VanDamme.
| RECOGNIZING THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE US

The speaker at our April luncheon, League member and Clerk of Courts
Crystal Kinzel, took us on a whirlwind tour of Collier County’s 100 year
history. Continuing the theme of history, we recognized our own
historical treasures: LWVCC’s past Presidents. These exceptional women
are forever part of the Collier County League’s history, which makes
them part of the fabric of our county’s history. Our Past Presidents are
our League’s most treasured resources. Their leadership has given our
local league a firm foundation that we continue to build upon, and we
thank them for their invaluable guidance.

The National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) Collier County facility recently moved all of their programs into one building. The new location is in the former Naples Senior Center at 5025 Costello Drive in Naples. The Social Policy Committee has scheduled a tour of the new facility in place of a regular committee meeting on May 4, from 10:00 am until 11:30-12:00. The tour will include information about the programs offered by NAMI Collier County including the Sarah Ann Drop-In Center, the HUGS (Health Under Guided Systems) program, Peer Support programs, supportive housing, outreach, education and support groups. Following the tour, those who are interested can join the group for lunch at a nearby restaurant which will be announced later.
| KNOW YOUR COUNTY TRAILBLAZERS HONORED

Four of our members who were instrumental in developing Know Your County Government (KYCG) and shepherding in through 40 + years of success were honored at the April 10 General Meeting at Tiburon Golf Club. Linda Denning, a retired Collier County Extension Service agent for the 4H Youth Development Program, started the first KYCG in 1980 with the League of Women Voters and Collier County Public Schools. Kathleen Slebodnik, Joyce Fletcher, and Kathy Ryan made sure the program continued through the years with lots of help from many LWVCC members including many this year. A big congratulations and thank you to our trailblazers and all our members who supported the program through the years. |
