Our Mission

To promote and mainstream the LWVUS/LWVFL/LWVCC DEI policy through the principles and practices of the committees and teams of the LWVCC
and thereby engage individuals, households, community leaders and policy makers of Collier County to create a more perfect democracy.

Program Plan 2024-2025

Objectives

Objective 1:  By the end of May 2025, the LWVCC will advance its DEI policy by strengthening relationships and trust with at least three well-aligned organizations through actions at the individual (member) level, organizational level (local, state and national), and within our community of Collier County.

Objective 2: By the end of May 2025, the LWVCC membership, board of directors, LWVCC committees and teams will have greater awareness and knowledge of the LWV DEI policy and its benefits.

Objective 3:  By the end of May 2025, the DEI Committee will contribute to make the LWVCC a more welcoming place for all.

Naturalization Ceremony

Three DEI members, Susan Housel, Lindsay Richardson, and Cynthia Cromwell, visited the Lee County Naturalization site on Monday, February 10, 2025. The DOI officials interviewed 29 new citizens who had passed the Naturalization test. All had family and supporters as witnesses to their special day. On this day, members of 16 countries were naturalized. The ceremony occurs about three times per week, and a larger event is held once a year at the downtown Lee County Courthouse.

As part of the ceremony, each candidate was introduced alphabetically by their country and then gave their Oath of Allegiance to the U.S.  They viewed an inspirational video to America the Beautiful. LWVCC member Cynthia Cromwell led the Oath of Allegiance to Flag.  Lee County Officer Patricia Mader gave a heartwarming welcome (with handshakes and hugs) to each new citizen who will have all the benefits of full citizenship. Each new citizen came forward to receive their Certificate with photos and applause for them all.

Following the ceremony, Lee County Patriots from the Supervisor of Election office registered the citizens to vote and distributed informational materials provided by Collier and Lee Counties.

The DEI Committee meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 2:00.

STRONG TURNOUT FOR MLK PARADE BY LWVCC

The annual parade to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 20th in downtown Naples was a grand success for the LWVCC, led by our DEI Committee. Over 20 enthusiastic members and guests carried commemorative posters and marched alongside Diane and Mitch Moore’s “Hot Music” truck and new member Ronna Hoffberg’s “Frango” golf cart.

Everyone was festive and enthusiastic as they marched, waved to the parade watchers, tossed candy, and handed out flags to the children. Following the parade, Tina Palmese ably coordinated members for the tabling event during the bandstand program hosted by the local NAACP. Tina’s comment said it best “what a great way to start the year for LWVCC!”

MEMBERS OF THE DEI COMMITTEE TOUR
THE NAPLES PRIDE CENTER

Members of the DEI committee met at the Naples Pride Center for a tour of the cheerful site. Director Cori Cracium explained the history of the Pride Fest and the Center. She delivered impassioned information about her work to retain the Pride Fest despite challenges from protesters.

The Pride Center provides mental health counseling and educational support for the parents and family of LGBTQ+ children. She noted that there is a 45% chance of suicide when LGBTQ+ family members are not supportive. Many of those in attendance agreed to attend the Naples City Council hearing on January 15 to support the Pride community and allowing the PrideFest to continue in June, 2025.
