Oil Drilling in Big Cypress: Low Return and High Cost to the Environment

Drilling in Big Cypress was the focus of the Environmental Affairs Committee’s October meeting where a senior attorney for the National Resources Defense Council explain how a Texas-based oil company has multiple permits pending to drill in Collier County’s Big Cypress. You might not know that 75% of drilling in Florida is in the panhandle;, the remainder is in Everglades/Big Cypress-- where the amount of oil is minimal and quality very low. Patti Forkan and Judy Hushon penned a letter to the Big Cypress Swamp Advisory Committee asking them to deny a permit and in early November the oil drilling company’s request to drill in the watershed was denied.
